The world’s people have been demanding justice and equality for centuries. Once again, it has become our intense cry as countless incidents evoke our society at large to speak up and take action to bring forth justice and equality starting with the systemic systems that maintain injustice and inequality. This is a cause that cannot be unseen nor denied.

We feel that it is our responsibility to people and our society to advocate and educate others, beginning with those closest to us in our homes, our families, and at our workplaces — our peers, employers, and subordinates. So, how can we take a stand for equality in the workplace?

Equality refers to the fair treatment of people regardless of their age, race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, or social status. At the workplace, equality means to ensure that people are given equal opportunities, equal pay, and are well accepted for their differences. It is to accept and value diversity, create an inclusive and conducive working environment where employees feel secure and happy, and eliminate unfair treatment or any forms of discrimination in the workplace.

Organizations that fosters equality at the workplace has revealed that they are able to attract competent people while retaining a wider pool of talent. This is because employees love to be part of a culture where they are perceived and treated as equals and are valued for their individuality and unique contribution. As such, it also increases employee engagement with their peers as well as their jobs as they feel respected and accepted regardless of their background and culture differences.

When employees have high engagement and healthy relationship with each other, they are more likely to collaborate and work well together as a team. A workplace culture that treats people from all kinds of backgrounds equally enhances collaboration, hence creating a diverse workforce. Having a team of people from diverse backgrounds is proven to increase productivity as they bring with them a variety of skills and experiences which they can share with one another. Diversity also widens the range of ideas and stimulates creative and thought-proving solutions thus enhancing problem-solving and innovation.
